In just four years, Clever has grown from a budding startup with five staff members to a leading education technology company whose software-as-a-service (SaaS) has been adopted by over 50,000 schools across the US.

Their founding vision was to take obstacles out of using software in the classroom, but as they grew, they found themselves facing obstacles of their own.

Challenge

Scaling up without compromising quality.

Challenge

Clever had been scrambling to keep up with the number of web pages, email templates, and other public-facing pieces its marketing campaigns were calling for.

“Bandwidth and consistency were probably our two biggest headaches,” explains Renette Youssef, Clever’s VP of Marketing. “We were using a freelance graphic design contractor and wanted to do a lot more work with a lot more polish. We were struggling with scaling while keeping a consistent level of quality.”

Clever knew they needed a lot more creative support if they were going to continue to scale up their marketing. But they couldn’t trust just anyone.

Clever knew they needed a lot more creative support if they were going to continue to scale up their marketing. But they couldn’t trust just anyone.

They needed someone who understood the company’s brand and vision; a team flexible enough to help them with anything from web design to print collateral - and who could get it all out on a short deadline.

“With our marketing team expanding to include a mix of roles, we needed more than one contractor. Without more help, we knew we would definitely fail,” Renette explains.

Clever also needed someone who was familiar—or better yet, certified—with Marketo, and who could comfortably consult on and implement solutions within the platform.

The hunt was on for an outside partner they could trust.

Solution

Hiring a whole team—without in-house overhead.

Solution

Renette had worked with Redstamp at a previous job and thought the agency might make the perfect white-knight candidate to take on their backlog of design projects.

She got in touch and proposed a trial project.

That project was all it took to convince Renette to sign up for Redstamp’s all-inclusive retainer model.

“We were impressed by how easy and seamless the process was. There wasn’t a lot of lift on our end,” says Cat Kamireddy, Clever’s product marketing specialist. “We gave them that one project to see how that went, and before we knew it, we were giving them all our projects.”

With Redstamp’s retainer model, the sky's the limit for creative requests.

Redstamp’s creative staff is available to Clever for any type of project, at any time, up to a certain number of hours each month.

“It can be anything: email templates, landing pages, branding work, white papers… they’ve worked on a lot of different types of projects for us,” Cat explains.

And because the model is so flexible, Clever can ramp up or dial back requests as needed.

“They scale with us as much as we want them to,” Renette explains. “If it’s a quiet month, it will just be a few calls here and there. It makes them easy to work with.”

As Clever’s marketing team grew from one person to five, Redstamp added more people to the Clever account to keep up with their growing needs while maintaining the same project manager and creative director for continuity.

New Clever staff were introduced to Redstamp right away, with Clever emphasizing that staff were welcome to treat them as members of the team.

“Because we already had such a good relationship, it was easy for our new employees to get to know Redstamp’s team,” Cat says. “We all worked on the processes together, developing what we thought would work. And so far, it’s really been working well.”

Better work, faster delivery, and a relationship that drives results.

Result

Today, Clever and Redstamp enjoy a close, productive relationship that benefits both sides.

Together, they turn out assets that are stylish, on brand and the perfect illustration of just how far Clever has come from its early days.

“We have a clearer brand, a more defined brand,” Renette says. “People know what to expect when they get something from Clever now; it’s a lot more polished. We no longer look like a startup.”

The Redstamp retainer model allows Clever’s staff to generate the same close-knit collaboration that comes from working together under the same roof — without worry of going over budget.

“Redstamp is like an extension of our marketing team. It’s literally seamless. There’s not a lot of back and forth. They know the company and they do the work with enthusiasm,” Cat says.

They’re always readily available. Every time we email, message, or call, they’re there instantly.”

The teams have become as close as coworkers, chatting, editing, and iterating throughout each day using online collaboration tools like Slack and Asana.

“They’re always readily available. Every time we email, message, or call, they’re there instantly,” Cat says.

Redstamp’s availability is especially important because Clever’s project priorities and deadlines often shift or change.

“They’re very accommodating, which is amazing,” she says. “We move really fast. Sometimes, priorities shift on the fly or an urgent project will come up and take precedence over another one, and they never bat an eye.”

Clever’s team has also become more efficient as a result of the relationship, as they no longer have to try and put together assets themselves.

What’s more, the assets being created don’t just look good - they perform well, too.

This ‘Redstamp effect’ is evident in projects like a recent email announcement to customers that showcased Clever’s new brand. It earned a 30% click-through rate — surpassing both the 7% industry standard and Clever’s expectations.

“The metrics have come back ridiculously high – we had a lot of signups that day and it helped make the launch really successful,” Cat says. And, she adds, this type of response has also boosted staff confidence.

“Redstamp’s design material is first class. It has elevated the marketing team. Everyone knows we’ll be able to produce great work because we’re working with Redstamp.”
